Painting Place: The Story Behind Our Mural Project

What does it mean to belong to a place? At TAALLA, we explore that question with color, shape, and story — and our mural project is one of the most visible answers.

Inspired by the geometry of Scandinavian design and the quiet strength of Finnish folk art, this series of public murals is rooted in the landscapes and ecosystems of the Midwest. Each wall becomes a canvas not just for beauty, but for memory — honoring the native flora and fauna that have long called this region home.

From moose to monarchs, cardinals to loons, these designs celebrate the natural world while sparking conversation about environmental stewardship. They’re meant to be both grounding and uplifting — a visual reminder that the wild is not something far away, but something we live with, walk past, and depend on every day.

But this project isn’t just about nature — it’s also about people. Each mural is created in collaboration with local communities, designed to reflect both shared heritage and a shared future. We see art as a meeting point: where culture, ecology, and imagination come together in public space.

This is the heart of TAALLA. Rooted in place. Made for here.
