Chicks
How many chicks do loons usually have?
Most Common Loons lay two eggs, and if both hatch, they raise two chicks. Occasionally only one chick survives, especially if food is scarce or predators are present.
When do baby loons hatch?
Baby loons usually hatch about 26–30 days after the eggs are laid. In Minnesota, this often occurs from late June through July.
Are baby loons born with feathers?
Yes. Loon chicks hatch covered in soft black and brown down feathers. They can swim almost immediately, although they spend much of their first weeks riding on their parents' backs.
Why do baby loons ride on their parents' backs?
Young loon chicks ride on a parent's back to stay warm, avoid predators, and rest between swimming. This behavior is most common during their first two weeks of life.
