Nesting
Where do loons build their nests?
Common Loon build their nests directly on the ground, usually at the edge of a quiet lake or island. The nest is often made from mud, grasses, pine needles, and nearby vegetation.
Why do loons nest so close to the water?
Loons have legs positioned far back on their bodies, making it nearly impossible for them to walk on land. Nesting at the water's edge allows adults to easily slide into the lake if danger approaches.
When do loons lay their eggs?
In the northern United States and Canada, loons typically lay eggs from late May through June, depending on weather, ice-out, and lake conditions.
Do loons build a new nest every year?
Yes. Loons usually build a new nest each spring, although they often return to the same nesting territory and may reuse parts of a previous nest site if conditions are favorable.
