Loon Anatomy
Why are a loon's eyes red?
A loon's striking red eyes help them see clearly underwater, especially in low light. The red color is caused by pigments in the eye that filter light and improve underwater vision. During winter, their eyes often become a duller brown or gray.
Why are a loon's legs so far back on its body?
A loon's legs are positioned far back to create powerful propulsion underwater, making them exceptional divers. This design makes walking on land difficult, which is why loons spend very little time ashore.
